Mulagumoodu Vicariate is one of the four Vicariates (deneries) in the diocese of Kottar, which is located in Kanyakumari District, the southern most tip of India . It is a land of rich catholic faith. People of different faiths live in social harmony. Evangelization works are carried out in full wing. Faith came to this part of India through St.Thomas, one of the twelve a postles. Then some 500 years back St. Francis Xavier did a vigorous evangelization work in this part of our country. Then 248 years back a native Indian, a hindu convert died a martyr and was instrumental to the growth of catholic faith. His name is Martyr Devasahayam.

The people are very religious and church going. The church activities are very systematically organized with people's participation.

During sunday masses the churches over flow with people. Hundreds of children attend catechism classes. The involvement of the people in the church activities is excellent.


Geographics Picture:

It has a beautiful landscape with hills on one side and plain lands on the other side. Coconut groves and paddy fields decorate nature. On the hills the main cultivation is rubber plantation. People also cultivate spices on the hills. Banana is the very popular fruit available. The land wears a green look when we have good rain. We have three season hot-hotter-hottest. People eat rice and curry one day and curry and rice the next day.


Socio Economic Situation:

Social and economical backwardness is the most common phenomenon in this community. The dicotomy between the rich and poor is very vast. Poverty is the cause for all social backwardness. Many people live in uetter poverty being unable to fulfill the basic needs such as food, shelter, education, medical care etc. One of our priorities in our evangelization process is to the uplift of the people from the clutches of poverty and social oppression.


Our Mission:

We take care of the pastoral, social and spiritual needs of the people with the gospel motto as the preferential of option for the poor. Our evangelization activities will have a special thrust on social change.
